Murray Bain - chief information officer
Murray took up his post in July 2008, and is responsible for information management and information and communications technology.
He started his career in local government finance in Hertfordshire before moving across to the IT sector as a business analyst. Then followed a spell in project and programme management, notably for St Albans City and District Council where Murray project managed the move from household rates to the Poll Tax (Community Charge) and several other major projects.
He joined NHS Direct during the third phase of its development in 1999 as IT Manager at the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Contact Centre before working centrally with the DH on NHS Direct technology issues. In 2004, when NHS Direct became a Special Health Authority, Murray took up the CIO role responsible for ensuring that the IT and telecommunications infrastructure for NHS Direct operated on a 24-hour, 7/365 day basis to deliver both front line and support services for the national operation. During his tenure as CIO he refreshed all front line technologies including implementing a national Voice over IP telephony.
