Colleague praise after Southend moped accident

An off duty paramedic who came to the aid of a woman injured after a moped accident in Southend has been praised for his response.

The accident happened at about 7.15 last Thursday evening (June 26) in Cherry Orchard Way.  The 30-year-old woman was riding the vehicle with a pillion passenger when she collided with a sign post. The impact caused her to suffer a broken right arm and broken lower left leg.

Paramedic Laurie Phillipson said Mark Whiddon, a fellow paramedic in the Southend area, was calm and professional in the management of the patient.

"Mark was driving along when he came across the scene. When myself and my colleague Chris Connor arrived about five minutes later, Mark had taken brilliant care of the patient. He was heavily involved in her treatment, giving drugs, reassurance, helping with her immobilisation and staying with her until we left.

"The job would have been a lot harder without his significant input. Both him and Chris were brilliant and full credit should be given for making a difficult job much more straightforward."

The patient was taken to Southend Hospital for further care. The male passenger suffered a minor ankle injury.
