Dramatic jetty rescue for Canvey man
A man was flown to hospital yesterday (Monday) after the ambulance service and coastguards joined up to help take care of him.
The ambulance service was called to Canvey boat yard at about 4.45pm by neighbours of the 57-year-old patient. A rapid response vehicle (emergency care practitioner Allen Taylor) was dispatched as well as the crew of paramedic Darren Riley and emergency medical technician Lee Umpleby.
The team found the man was unresponsive to pain and was unable to speaking clearly. Due to the fact he was on a jetty and the only route to this jetty was via unstable walkways, the only safe way for him to be transferred to A&E or ambulance was via the Seaking Helicopter, as the Essex Air Ambulance would not have been able to land on such unstable ground.
Coastguards were contacted for their views, and arrived on scene to assist. While waiting for the helicopter, the patient's condition was stabilised, and he was made fit to fly. The patient was then transferred to Seaking 125 - which was from Watersham Airbase - and taken to Southend Airport for transport to Southend General via land ambulance.
Lee said: “This was the only safe way for this patient to be transferred to hospital. It was brilliant to see how well all emergency services worked together on this type of incident.”
