Careers in the ambulance service
There has never been a more exciting time to join the NHS ambulance service.
The traditional role of the frontline ambulance crew has changed almost beyond recognition in the past decade and continues to evolve as demand increases for flexible emergency and urgent healthcare.
Our core business remains responding to 999 calls as quickly as possible, but there are now more methods of delivering care than previously and, therefore, more diverse career opportunities for ambitious health workers.
These include working as a Community Paramedic in Primary Care, as an Emergency Care Practitioner working in both the emergency and GP out of hours settings, or becoming a clinically focused dispatcher in our modern control centres.
A greater emphasis is placed on clinical education and excellence than ever before, with many new entrants now undertaking a degree level pathway to becoming a paramedic.
Our non emergency services staff also enjoy greater clinical training and opportunities than previously, with many responding to certain types of emergency call, such as cardiac arrests, to help more patients across the region.
During 2007 and early 2008 we will be increasing the size of our workforce both on the road and in control to ensure that we meet the government's new response time performance measures being introduced on April 1, 2008.
As well as our frontline services, there are many opportunities to work as part of our vital support team at our centres in Bury, Bedford, Chelsmford and Norwich.
